Kindle Unlimited is now called Kindle+, and for the first time the subscription includes audiobooks. For authors, that raises a practical question: how do you get your audiobook in, and is it worth it? The short answer is that only two kinds of audiobook qualify today: Amazon's AI-narrated "virtual voice" editions, and ACX audiobooks that meet four conditions. This guide walks through both routes step by step, shows the eligibility traps that catch most authors (especially nonfiction authors), and explains how listening is paid and reported.
Everything below is based on KDP's own help pages as we read them on October 28, 2026. Amazon has said it will adjust the program as it learns, so check the official KDP and ACX help pages before you make changes to your books.
What changed, in plain terms
KDP emailed authors on October 21, 2026 to say Kindle Unlimited had been renamed Kindle+ and that audiobooks were now part of the subscription. For readers the US price is still $11.99 a month, with up to 20 titles borrowed at once. For authors, four things are new:
- Audiobooks can be borrowed. Eligible audiobooks are enrolled in KDP Select alongside their ebook.
- Listening is paid like reading. It is measured in Kindle Edition Normalized Pages (KENP) and paid from the same KDP Select Global Fund. Amazon says it is adding money to the fund for audio.
- It is US-only for now. Audiobooks in Kindle+ are distributed in the US marketplace only. Authors anywhere can enroll, but only US subscribers can borrow the audio.
- Reports have changed. The KENP report now splits Kindle+ Read from Kindle+ Listened.
Which audiobooks can be in Kindle+?
This is where most of the confusion starts. Kindle+ does not convert your ebook into audio, and it does not accept every audiobook on Audible. Here is how each type of audiobook is treated right now:
| Your audiobook | In Kindle+? | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| KDP virtual voice (AI narration) | Yes, automatically | The matching ebook is enrolled in KDP Select. The audio must stay exclusive to Audible. |
| ACX, Pay for Production | Yes, if eligible and you enroll it | Ebook live in KDP Select, exclusive Audible distribution, Read & Listen (Whispersync for Voice) turned on. |
| ACX, Royalty Share | No, not at this time | KDP says royalty share payment models are not eligible for now. |
| ACX, non-exclusive | No | Exclusive Audible distribution is a requirement. |
| Sold only through other audio platforms | No | Kindle+ audio comes through KDP virtual voice or ACX only. |
If you uploaded self-produced files to ACX, use Check eligibility for KDP Select on your Bookshelf to see how your title is classified rather than guessing. And remember the ebook is the anchor: no ACX audiobook can be enrolled unless its ebook is live in KDP Select.
Route 1: virtual voice audiobooks (automatic)
Virtual voice is KDP's AI narration tool. It is still an invite-only beta for US distribution, with a 40% royalty on sales and a list price between $3.99 and $14.99. If you have one and your ebook is in KDP Select, you do not need to do anything: the audiobook is included in Kindle+ as well as Audible Plus.
If your ebook is eligible, you will see Add Audible audiobook with virtual voice on your Bookshelf. KDP's eligibility rules include:
- The ebook is live (not a pre-order) and has worldwide or US distribution rights.
- It is reflowable, not fixed layout, and has a Kindle interactive (NCX) table of contents.
- Its primary language is English, Spanish, Italian or French.
- The book does not already have an Audible audiobook, including one made through ACX. You cannot have both a virtual voice and an ACX edition of the same ebook.
The nonfiction catch: tables, footnotes and figures
KDP's own troubleshooting guidance points out problems that hit business, self-help and how-to books hardest:
- Tables are read row by row, left to right, which is hard to follow by ear.
- Footnotes may be narrated in the middle of the text.
- Image captions may be read while the image itself is skipped.
- Numbers in two formats ("six (6) steps") may be read twice.
- Chapter titles set as images are not read, so listeners lose their place.
If your book is full of frameworks and charts, listen to the full preview before publishing. The fix is usually in the ebook file: captions that make sense without the picture, short lists instead of heavy tables, and chapter titles in text. Professional book formatting usually takes 1–2 weeks and improves the reading experience too.
One more rule for this route: while the ebook is in KDP Select, the audio must be exclusive to Audible, and KDP says that applies to any audio edition of the book. If you already sell an audio edition through other platforms, you cannot keep a virtual voice edition in Select at the same time.
Route 2: ACX audiobooks (opt in)
If your audiobook was produced through ACX (Audible's Audiobook Creation Exchange), it can join Kindle+ only if it meets all four of KDP's conditions. Use this as a checklist:
- The matching ebook is live and enrolled in KDP Select. That means the ebook is exclusive to the Kindle Store for each 90-day term. Print editions can still be sold anywhere.
- The audiobook has exclusive Audible distribution. You change this in your ACX account, not in KDP.
- Read & Listen (Whispersync for Voice) is enabled. The ebook and audiobook must match closely enough for listeners to switch between them.
- The production type is Pay for Production. Royalty Share titles are not eligible at this time.
KDP also notes that enrolling an ACX audiobook adds no new KDP exclusivity requirements. Your existing ACX distribution terms stay as they are.
How to enroll an ACX audiobook, step by step
- Go to your KDP Bookshelf and find the title. The ebook should show KDP Select: eBook enrolled.
- Under Audible audiobook (ACX), select Enroll audiobook in KDP Select. If you only see Check eligibility for KDP Select, your ACX account is not linked yet (see the next section).
- Review the enrollment details in the pop-up.
- Tick the box confirming you own the audiobook distribution rights and have access to the ACX account.
- Click Enroll audiobook. You can also do this from the Marketing page with Enroll audiobook.
- Allow up to 24 hours for the Kindle+ badge to appear and for the audiobook to become available to borrow.
If your ACX and KDP accounts are not linked
The accounts link automatically when they share the same customer ID. If you signed up with different logins, you must verify the ACX account once: select Check eligibility for KDP Select, tick the rights boxes, choose Sign in to ACX and enter the one-time security code that is sent to you. KDP's rules here matter for co-written and business books:
- Only the rights holder's ACX account can be linked to the KDP account that holds the ebook.
- If you have several ACX accounts, link the one that holds the rights to this title.
- For co-authored audiobooks, only the rights holder account can be linked.
If a company owns the rights (say, a consultancy publishing its founder's book), make sure both accounts belong to that rights holder. Our post on how to copyright a book explains ownership for ghostwritten books.
Why an ACX audiobook shows "not eligible"
| Reason | What to do |
|---|---|
| Ebook not in KDP Select | Enroll the live ebook first. It must not be for sale on other ebook stores during the term. |
| Audiobook is non-exclusive | Changing exclusivity is done in ACX. Check what your ACX terms and any other audio distribution contracts allow before you switch. |
| Read & Listen is off | Ask ACX support to enable Whispersync for Voice. It needs the ebook and audio to match. |
| Ebook and audio no longer match | If you edit the ebook so it no longer matches the audio, KDP makes the audiobook ineligible and removes the headphone badge. Bring the files back in sync. |
| Royalty Share deal | Not eligible at this time. The options are to wait for a policy change or plan a new Pay for Production edition when your ACX contract allows. |
The "no longer match" rule matters for nonfiction, which is often updated with new examples or figures. Plan updates for both formats together, and keep a change log so a narrator can re-record only the changed sections.
How Kindle+ pays for listening
Per KDP's Royalties in Kindle+ page:
- You are paid once per page per subscriber. If a subscriber reads pages 1–50 and then listens to pages 51–100, you earn for all 100. If they listen to pages 1–50 after reading them, that is a re-read and earns nothing extra.
- Immersive Reading pays the higher rate. If someone reads and listens at the same time, you are paid once, at whichever rate is higher.
- The fund is shared. Your payout is your share of total pages read and listened, and the per-page rate is set each month when the fund is announced in the KDP community forum.
- Audible earnings are separate. Audible sales and Audible Plus royalties are not affected by Kindle+ enrollment. For ACX titles, those Audible royalties still appear only in your ACX account.
- Incentives are banned. You may not offer gifts, discounts, contest entries or bonus content to get Kindle+ subscribers to read or listen.
Amazon has not published how listening converts into KENP or how a listened page compares with a read one, and it has said it may evolve the fund. Treat listening income as new and variable until you have seen a few months of statements.
Where to find it in your reports (and why numbers dropped)
| Report | What it now shows |
|---|---|
| KENP report | Kindle+ activity only, filterable by Kindle+ Read and Kindle+ Listened |
| Prior Months' Royalties | One combined Kindle+ royalties column for pages read and listened |
| Audible royalties column (virtual voice) | Audible sales plus Audible Plus listening |
| ACX dashboard | Audible royalties for ACX audiobooks |
Since October 21, many authors have reported lower KENP and estimated royalties on their dashboards, including for earlier months, and as of late October Amazon had not posted an explanation. KDP's help now says Audible Plus listening sits in the Audible column rather than the KENP report. That may explain part of the drop for virtual voice authors, but it has not been confirmed.
Until it is clear, take dated screenshots of your reports, rely on finalized statements (KDP finalizes monthly KENP near the 15th of the following month), check the Audible column if you have virtual voice titles, and contact KDP support with your screenshots if finalized numbers still look wrong.
Should you put your audiobook in Kindle+?
If you are already in KDP Select and your audiobook qualifies, enrolling is usually low risk: it does not change your ACX terms, and an ACX audiobook can be unenrolled separately from the ebook. The bigger question is whether Select suits your book at all. If most of your sales come from Amazon, it fits. If you rely on libraries, other ebook stores or direct sales, ebook exclusivity costs more, and exclusive audio rules out most other audio stores and library platforms for that edition.
Three common situations (illustrative examples)
- A consultant's business book, author-narrated, ACX Pay for Production, ebook in Select: confirm Read & Listen is on, link the accounts and enroll.
- A memoir on an ACX Royalty Share deal: not eligible for now. The ebook can stay in Kindle+ while the audiobook keeps earning on Audible.
- A how-to guide full of tables, ebook in Select, no audio yet: virtual voice is an option if you are invited, but test how the tables sound. The alternative is a human narrator working from an adapted script, produced through ACX.
Exclusivity also affects your Audible royalty rate under Audible's new model. We covered that change, and its end-of-year deadline, in ACX's royalty change explained.
Planning a new audiobook with Kindle+ in mind
- Choose an eligible model: ACX Pay for Production or virtual voice.
- Finish editing before recording, because Read & Listen depends on the texts matching.
- Adapt visual content into short spoken descriptions, and offer worksheets as a PDF where your terms allow.
- Decide on the voice. Memoirs and thought-leadership books often benefit from the author narrating, with coaching.
- Leave time. Professional audiobook production typically takes 6–10 weeks, and pre-launch book marketing 4–8 weeks. Kindle+ is a discovery channel, not a marketing plan.
Kindle+ audiobook checklist
- Ebook live and enrolled in KDP Select.
- Audiobook is virtual voice, or ACX Pay for Production with exclusive Audible distribution.
- Read & Listen enabled, and ebook and audio text still match.
- ACX rights-holder account linked to the KDP account that holds the ebook.
- Audiobook enrolled, and the Kindle+ badge checked after 24 hours.
- Auto-renewal reviewed: turning off the ebook's renewal makes an ACX audiobook ineligible at the end of the term.

Frequently asked questions
Does Kindle+ automatically turn my ebook into an audiobook?
No. KDP Select does not create audio. A virtual voice audiobook you created joins Kindle+ automatically when its ebook is in KDP Select, and an eligible ACX audiobook joins once you enroll it from your KDP Bookshelf.
Are ACX Royalty Share audiobooks eligible for Kindle+?
Not at this time. KDP requires a Pay for Production deal and says royalty share models are not eligible for now. Check the KDP Select Enrollment help page, as this may change.
Do I have to remove my audiobook from other stores?
For virtual voice, yes: while the ebook is in KDP Select, any audio edition of the book must be exclusive to Audible. An ACX audiobook must already have exclusive Audible distribution to qualify, so a non-exclusive ACX title is not eligible.
Can listeners outside the United States hear my audiobook in Kindle+?
Not yet. Audiobooks in Kindle+ are in the US marketplace only for now, although authors in any country can enroll eligible titles.
Why did my KENP numbers drop after the Kindle+ change?
Amazon had not explained it publicly as of late October 2026. KDP now reports Audible Plus listening in the Audible royalties column, which may account for part of it. KENP is finalized near the 15th of the following month, so rely on your finalized royalty reports.
